A HOMER RUN

The 90-minute one-act play An Iliad is a stunning marvel. This retelling of the famous epic The Iliad, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer, is not a straight reading of The Iliad. This variation, adapted by Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson, mixes excerpts from the poem with modern interjections, a few of them comic and flippant, but most of them stark contemporary commentaries on the hell that is warfare. It’s also an exceptionally staggering test of a performer’s physical and emotional resources. For ETC in Santa Barbara, the show will be performed by John Tufts, who was exceptional with his tour-de-force performance in I Am My Own Wife.

The show will be performed five times LIVE on the stage of The New Vic. Each performance will be aired and may be watched on computers, smart TVs, iPads and iPhones. Jonathan Flaksman, a cellist with the Santa Barbara Symphony, is the musician. Tickets for the event are $30 per device and are available for purchase online at ETCSB. Performances run April 15 at 5:00 PM, April 16 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, 17 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, and April 18 at 2:00 PM. Given that each performance is performed live, patrons must purchase tickets to a specific performance time and will not have the option to view at their leisure.
