COME RIDE THE CAROUSEL

The photos are in for Musical Theatre West’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical masterpiece Carousel, which opens tonight and plays through April 9, 2017 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.  Truly one of the greatest musicals ever written, Carousel explores the timeless message of message of love, hope, forgiveness, and redemption.  A dazzling spectacle of music, dance, and spirit, MTW’s production features a full orchestra, performing some of the most powerful music ever written for the stage, including the immortal “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “If I Loved You” and the joyful “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over.”

Carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Doug Carpenter, Nick in Broadway’s Beautiful,) captivates and marries naïve millworker Julie Jordan (Amanda Leigh Jerry from Off-Broadway’s Gertrude Stein: SAINTS!), but all too soon they fall on hard times and unbearable loss. Yet the power of love perseveres.  The spiritually uplifting story of one man’s redemption and the tragedy of feelings left unspoken, Carousel—under the direction of Joe Langworth and musical direction of Dennis Castellano, with choreography by Daniel Smith—is the second musical by the legendary team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). The 1945 work was adapted from Ferenc Molnár’s 1909 play Liliom, and is acknowledged as Richard Rodgers’ favorite of all his musicals.
