REFLECT

A beautifully produced in memoriam video has been released today, and it’s truly lovely. In just about 8 minutes, I realized what has been missing among the devastating past year: reflection. As a promising year begins, take a moment to think about what we have lost during this divisive time. Broadway Remembers honors the memories of some of those the Broadway community lost between June 2019 and December 2020, but as you watch some 100 lives celebrated, it might be a good time to mourn those lost to COVID and, yes, AIDS. The video features original vocal performances by Sierra Boggess and Raúl Esparza and celebrates the lives of more than 100 people from all areas and disciplines within the theatrical community.

Esparza said, “As we ring in a new year, it felt important for us to celebrate the lives we’ve lost these past many months. Normally, we have the occasion to collectively mourn at in-person memorial services, funerals, and – once a year at the Tony Awards, with the official in memoriam segment. This year all of that proved impossible, so this is an opportunity for us to process our grief and give these towering figures one final ovation.”

“Broadway Remembers” features music production by Benedict Braxton-Smith, graphic design by Remy Kass, motion design by Pan Wenquan, and editing by Harry Tuman.

They didn’t mention it but I learned Marcus D’Amico also died in the last two weeks. Farewell Mouse. He was in An Inspector Calls on Broadway.

I’m almost certain that Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther fame wasn’t on Broadway, but he was a New York Theater actor Off-Broadway.
