HOLLYWOOD HOME MOVIES
FROM THE ACADEMY NOW AVAILABLE!

Hoo-boy, is this ever fun! Unique home movies from the 30s through the 60s of not just stars but the famous folks behind the camera. This annual event is streaming online for the first time. Whether black and white or in color, these pristine moving pictures curated by the Academy Film Archive are a personal, entertaining glimpse into the lives of classic Hollywood figures, and celebrate some of the people who overcame barriers to work in the motion picture industry. Presented by Randy Haberkamp and Lynne Kirste (whose knowledge of what’s on the celluloid will blow you away!), these silents are accompanied with live music composed and performed by Michael Mortilla. Watch it here for free.

Footage includes:

  • Director Dorothy Arzner – the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America – boating with her friend Billie Burke
  • Gilbert Roland’s 16mm home movies in early Kodachrome
  • A party at the home of Dolores Del Rio and Cedric Gibbons
  • A road trip with cinematographer James Wong Howe
  • Director Henry Koster leaving Europe as the Nazis come to power
  • Behind the scenes with Loretta Young, Celeste Holm and Elsa Lanchester
  • Nat King Cole at a movie premiere
  • Ida Lupino directing a female cast led by Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills in The Trouble with Angels
  • Plus, Constance Bennett, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, William Haines, Gypsy Rose Lee, Satchel Paige and more

Also, Hayley Mills, writer-director Gregory Nava and Henry Koster’s son Bob Koster share stories about their family films, and archivist Sean Savage provides tips on caring for your own home movies.
