REASONS FOR LOVE
Covering the arts nationwide means that Stage and Cinema has received hundreds and hundreds of virtual entertainments, from classical and jazz to theater and art, all with basically the same purpose: to entertain you at home and try to raise money for struggling organizations. But nothing in the past two months has touched, moved and inspired me as has the song “Seasons of Love” from San Diego Musical Theatre and its “Pre-Professional” professionals.
Here you have the stars of tomorrow, all youngsters from SDMT’s production of Rent that had to be postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus, singing from their homes to raise our spirits. We’ve seen major choruses and orchestras gather homebound artists to create a collective work with great success, but this is different. Not only do we have beautiful, unique faces with bright eyes looking forward to tomorrow’s possibilities, but they sound astounding. Singing alone with their cell phones and aided by Music Director Don LeMaster, this heartfelt cast nailed it with no rehearsal or director to speak of. I’ve been hearing this song since I saw the original Broadway outing, yet this is the first time I got chills and thoroughly verklempt.
