MOVIES AND TV SHOWS YOU DIDN’T KNOW
WERE FILMED IN LIVERPOOL

Liverpool is a city at the heart of the North West of the UK, and it’s commonly known for its musical geniuses, The Beatles, as well as being one of the top tourist destinations in Europe. However, although the city is known for its music history, it has been featured in many movies and TV shows over the last few decades. Films and TV shows sometimes don’t openly speak about their filming locations, but sometimes, it’s pretty obvious where things are filmed. Liverpool as a city has a lot to offer to directors and film producers, as the city boasts older style buildings as well as the more modern look around certain parts of the city. Today we’re taking a quick look at the various movies and films that you may not have known were filmed in Liverpool.

Before we do, we just quickly want to talk about the regeneration happening in Liverpool. Not only is this excellent news for the city and everyone who visits there, but it will also mean that in the next few years, there is the possibility that more films will be produced in the Northern city as it expands and grows. The likes of RWinvest contribute highly to the vast improvements across the city, and their developments make a real difference to the skyline of Liverpool.

Captain America: The First Avenger

A Hollywood blockbuster, Captain America: The First Avenger was filmed in Liverpool in 2011. The hit movie found that filming in Liverpool was a lot easier than trying to find a filming location in a busy American city. Stanley Dock, in Liverpool, that is undergoing vast amounts of regeneration now but was once a derelict docklands, was used for filming here. They often say that Liverpool is a sister city of New York and other huge American cities which is why producers and directors frequently choose to shoot here instead of the larger cities. In the film, if you aren’t from Liverpool, then you’d never know that the dock is only a stand-in. The producers of this Marvel film did a great job at filming this movie and showing off a different side of Liverpool.

Yesterday

The 2019 film starring Ed Sheeran and Himesh Patel is a romantic comedy fictional film which was directed by Danny Boyle. The storyline follows a character as they realise the world has never heard of the Beatles or any of their famous songs. Consequently, the character (played by Himesh Patel) releases the songs as though he wrote them. Because the film is based around The Beatles and their songs, the producers take us on a filming experience to the famous Beatles spots in Liverpool (which in the film, don’t exist!). It’s a great, funny concept that really did well on the box office. Filming locations included the likes of Penny Lane and other areas around the city.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

A spin-off to the famous Harry Potter series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards (set 70 years before Harry Potter reads his book in school!). However, rather than filming in the bustling American city, producers chose to use various locations in Liverpool to double as 1920’s New York. The film includes famous Liverpool landmarks such as St Georges Hall and the Cunard Building. It’s a great film, and the producers have done an excellent job doubling the Northern English city for an old-style New York.
