ONCE UPON A TIME…

… An intrepid pair of siblings took a dreamlike journey to unexpected places. The iconic Brothers Grimm story leaps from page to stage with a production pocked with perky puppets created by director Doug Fitch. Sure, a witch wants to bake some kids into gingerbread and eat them, but this deliciously dark fairy tale will appeal to audiences of all ages, and it’s in English (a translation created for LA Opera by Richard Sparks).

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and soprano Liv Redpath star as the famous Hansel and Gretel lost in the woods, who battle the ravenous Witch — a zany portrayal by Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in her role debut — while the LA Opera orchestra, under the baton of James Conlon, will glory in Engelbert Humperdink’s rich, folk-inspired score. The production will feature the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, led by its new artistic director, Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, in his company debut. Filled with cinematic orchestration, sprinkled with satirical humor, powdered with 12-foot-tall creatures, iced with fantastical sets and elaborate special effects, this enchanting confection features an eye-catching production design unlike any fairy tale you’ve ever seen. How do I know? Check out these photos.
