EAGER FOR EGAN

It was sheer luck that I’ve been able to see Broadway Baby Susan Egan in over 10 shows since the mid-1980s. From intimate stages (Babes at the Matrix; Hello, Again at the Blank) to national tours (Bye Bye Birdie as Kim) to Broadway (Thoroughly Modern Millie and as the original Belle in Beauty and the Beast), she has always glowed with professionalism and true star quality. And naturally she can belt a song while acting the heck out of it (her Eliza in My Fair Lady was stunningly good). Any chance to see her is highly recommended.

Ms. Egan also gives back to the theater community, and has always supported the theater’s next generation of performers. This Saturday, May 12 at 5:00 and 7:30, she will be appearing in Unplugged with Susan Egan at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s dazzling Barrett Hall for CSArts-SGV’s inaugural fundraising celebration. A silent auction and cocktail reception for all guests begins at 6:15.

California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV), which just opened last August, is a public charter school that provides a creative, challenging, and nurturing environment that offers bright and talented students a rigorous college-preparatory education and pre-professional arts conservatory training; it’s a tuition-free, donation dependent program for 7th through 12th graders.

Pictured above, students in the program are collaborating and performing with Egan in this cabaret-style show that features songs from popular musicals and films, including Little Shop of Horrors and Wicked. So you get to see bright, new talent and one of my favorite stars, all while nurturing the arts community — but know that tickets are limited for both performances.

CSArts-SGV is an expansion of the award-winning Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA), of which Egan happens to be an alumna. One of the programs offered is the Musical Theatre Conservatory, which offers a rigorous and comprehensive course of study for serious musical theatre students, who aspire to achieve a career on stage, in film and television, or in the recording arts.
