COMEDY TONIGHT

More like side-splitting by side-splitting by Sondheim, Impro Theatre–the masters of long-form improvisations in the style of famous authors and genres–are gearing up for an opening night the likes of which you will never see again. Literally. In fact, every night during the run of Sondheim UnScripted at the Falcon Theater will be opening night. Co-directed by Dan O’Connor and Michele Spears, the story, libretto, and songs (both melody and lyrics) are always made up on the spot–never to be repeated again.

It’s a wonder to watch the cast (which also changes nightly) define character and plot by incorporating Sondheim’s trademark psychological subtext. It’s amazing to witness some of the best improvisers in the country get lost in a labyrinth of concocted characteristics while creating a completely improvised musical. Also expect a piano player who offers jaw-dropping mimicry of Sondheim’s intricate rhythmic accompaniments.

Quite often, the shenanigans produce some incredible guffaws and hardy laughter–the best you will ever have in the theater–but know that zaniness can often take a back seat to more dramatic proceedings; the tone of one Sonheim UnScripted I saw at the Odyssey Theatre was that of a very serious and masterful chamber musical.

Beginning Sept. 3, ticket holders attending Thursday night performances are welcome to participate in an informal Q&A discussion with the cast in the theater after the show.
