ARTURO SANDOVAL’S
AMAZING JAZZ WEEKEND IS HERE!

He moves easily across many varieties of jazz and instruments — using his trumpet to produce a fiery assortment of resonances, interchangeably stately, amusing and starry-eyed. The mighty, vibrant, effervescent Cuban trumpet player, big band leader, and composer Arturo Sandoval — a protégé of Dizzy Gillespie — is such a hot commodity globally that L.A. is lucky to have him residing here.

That could be why I’ve been lucky enough to seem so many times recently: His Latin Big Band—with actor Andy Garcia on bongos—was handily the most exciting, audience-rousing event at the 2017 Playboy Jazz Festival; he blew me away with the rawest, inventive scat I’ve heard in years at the Ford Amphitheatre’s salute to Ella’s 100th birthday; and coming up this weekend at The Wallis in Beverly Hills, Sandoval has curated a four-night musical carnival.

Everything has already been said about Sandoval’s superb phrasing and virtuoso technique, but did you know he’s also a father figure and teacher for emerging artists? Not only will he appear in his own concert with special guests, but he will also hold a master class, and introduce us to the next generation of jazz greats, whom Sandoval proudly calls the “Young Lions.”

On Thursday, Sandoval kicks off the jazz weekend by leading a Master Class, open to the public through ticket purchase. On Friday, check out Max Haymer on piano, vocalist Linda Briceño on trumpet (backed by Los Angeles musicians), and Edmar Castañeda on harp (backed by his Trio). On Saturday, will dazzle your soul in his own show (expect some special guests). On Sunday, you have to check out Connie Han on piano, and — backed by their bands — vocalist Cyrille Aimée, and vocalist Aubrey Logan on trombone. All performances begin at 7:30, and Sandoval will be hosting his “Young Lions.”
